The Camp David Accords, essentially, set a precedent for future peace agreements to be made not only between Israel and Egypt, but also Middle Eastern nations. While it did set a precedent for future peace negotiations in the Middle East, the Camp David Accords were, by no means, a complete peace agreement. As President Carter said in his remarks on the Camp David Summit joint summit, “… the long days at Camp David are over. But many months of difficult negotiations still lie ahead.” (Carter).  What the Camp David Accords certainly did do, however, is to establish that peace can actually be made in the Middle East. As President Carter said in the same speech, “We are privileged to witness tonight a significant achievement in the cause of peace, an achievement none thought possible a year ago, or even a month ago.” (Carter).

The Camp David Accords also changed the perception of Egypt in the Arab world. Under Gamal Nasser, the Egypt had been one of the leading nations in criticizing Israel, and calling for Palestinian independence. Many Arab nations felt that Egypt was simply giving up too much without fully bringing autonomy to the Palestinians. However, hit was somewhat expected by Anwar Sadat and the Egyptian leaders. "Most of those who contacted me following the declaration of this decision expressed their objection because of the feeling of utter suspicion and absolute lack of confidence between the Arab states and the Palestine people on the one hand and Israel on the other that still surges in us all," said Sadat to the Israeli Knesset (Sadat). Egypt was removed from the Arab League, and Sadat was assassinated on October 6, 1981 in an incident of open gunfire at a parade.

"Thereafter, Egypt was expelled from the Arab League and the Islamic Conference for having made peace with Israel and was charged with betraying Arab aspirations."
